Choosing Glass Marbles for Toys, Crafts and Aquariums: A 4-Step Specification Checklist

SunWard's four-step process for specifying glass marbles: diameter from the application, finish from the sales channel, packing from the destination, then the commercial terms.

Mixed Colour Glass Marbles 16 mm Bulk Pack, glass marbles in bulk from SunWard Products
SunWard Products Co., Ltd. has manufactured glass marbles in Zibo, Shandong, China since 1999, and the specification question buyers ask us most often is this: pick the diameter from the application, the finish from the sales channel, and the packing from the destination market. Diameters run 9–35 mm, MOQ starts at 1 ton, and popular sizes ship from stock. This checklist gives you the four decisions to lock before you request a quotation, in the order that prevents rework.

1. Choose the diameter from the application, not the catalogue

Work backwards from the object the marble has to fit. A 9–12 mm ball suits board games, narrow-neck vase filler and aquarium gravel; 13–19 mm is the general-purpose band that covers most toy, craft and decoration orders; 25–35 mm is a display size for bowls, centres and oversize game pieces. Confirm the nominal diameter and ask how size variation is screened before you commit, because two suppliers quoting "16 mm" may not be screening to the same band.
If the marble replaces an existing part — a chess piece, a solitaire board ball, a spray-can mixing ball — send the physical sample rather than the measurement. A calliper reading does not show roundness, and roundness is what decides whether the ball rolls true in a game or seats correctly in a valve.

2. Pick the finish by sales channel, not by personal preference

Four finishes cover almost every order: clear, solid colour, cat's eye and opaque ceramic-look. Clear and solid colour suit general retail and craft; cat's eye with a visible petal pattern photographs well and is standard for games and decorative packs; opaque and speckled (sesame) finishes read as ceramic and are the right choice where the marble sits against a busy background in a vase, planter or aquarium.
Finish also decides your compliance route. Toy-channel buyers need documented test evidence, and SunWard's factory is BSCI audited with marbles meeting EN71. Decorative and aquarium channels typically need material confirmation instead — in all cases 100% glass, inert, and not coated.

3. Match the packing format to where the product is sold

Twelve formats are available and the right one depends on the shelf, not on the price list: net bag with header card 50–500 pcs hangable, PVC bag 250 g–2 kg, PVC bag with handle 1–5 kg, woven bag 10–25 kg, PET barrel about 1 kg with label window, glass jar for gift, PVC bottle about 1 kg with handle, PVC box for gift or display, display box for retail counters, printed paper box, export carton 20–25 kg bulk, and custom label or header card under OEM or private label.
Tell the supplier the destination country when you choose the format. A hangable header card that works in one market may carry labelling expectations that do not apply in another, and mixed-pack assortments need the ratio agreed in writing before production.

4. Fix the four commercial terms before you compare prices

Do this in order: (1) confirm the diameter, colour or pattern and packing format in writing; (2) confirm minimum order quantity — 1 ton at SunWard, with popular sizes available from stock; (3) confirm the payment terms, T/T; (4) confirm the shipping basis and destination port. A price quoted against a different packing format or a different tolerance band is not comparable.
Ask for a retained sample with the quotation. Colour and pattern are the two attributes most likely to drift between lots, and a sample kept against the order settles any dispute without a third-party inspection. SunWard holds popular sizes in stock, so a first trial order can ship without waiting for a production slot.

FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for glass marbles?

Minimum order is 1 ton. Popular sizes are held in stock and can ship without a long production lead time, so a 1 ton trial order is practical for a first shipment. Final quantity per colour and packing format is confirmed on the PI, because mixed-colour assortments change the effective minimum.

Do you hold stock or manufacture to order?

Both. SunWard runs 50 production lines across 40,000 m² with annual output above 30,000 tonnes, which lets us hold popular diameters in stock while scheduling custom colours and patterns to order. Stock items ship quickly; custom runs are scheduled against the agreed specification.

Can you match a specific colour or pattern?

Yes, within production limits. Send a photo or a physical sample and we confirm the closest match before quoting. Exact colour matching across separate production runs is not guaranteed on glass, so bulk is checked against the approved sample rather than against a colour code.

What certifications apply to toy-grade glass marbles?

SunWard's factory is BSCI audited and our marbles meet EN71 requirements. Whether additional testing is needed depends on the destination market and the age grading of the finished toy, so confirm the required standard for your market before production rather than after.
